FORMER PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN REACTS TO THE DECLARATION OF A STATE OF EMERGENCY IN RIVERS STATE AND SUSPENSION OF KEY OFFICIALS

Suspension of Rivers Officials Tarnishes Nigeria’s Image - Former President Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned that the recent suspension of elected officials in Rivers State could severely damage Nigeria’s international reputation and deter potential investors.

Speaking at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium held in Abuja on Saturday, March 22, 2025, Jonathan expressed concern over the political turmoil in Rivers State, stating that such actions by key figures in the executive and legislative branches of government cast Nigeria in a negative light.

“These actions by key actors in the executive and legislative arms of government paint the country in a negative light,” he said.

While acknowledging that it is generally not customary for former presidents to comment on ongoing political issues to avoid exacerbating tensions, Jonathan emphasized that the global perception of a nation, and its ability to attract investment is heavily influenced by the conduct of its executive, legislative, and judicial institutions.

His remarks follow recent criticism from governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as unconstitutional and a threat to Nigeria’s democratic principles.

As previously reported by PUNCH Online, President Tinubu declared the emergency in response to prolonged political unrest in the state, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for a period of six months.

Jonathan explained that he chose to speak on the matter following appeals from Nigerians for him to weigh in on the unfolding crisis. He decried the erosion of judicial independence, warning that undue influence over the judiciary undermines public confidence in the legal system.

“It becomes difficult for anyone to have faith in the judiciary when individuals can dictate to the courts,” he stated.

The former president also emphasized the importance of inclusive governance, describing diversity, equity, and inclusion as essential pillars of effective leadership and societal progress.

“I believe that it is the hallmark of good leadership and governance to be able to leverage the transformative power of diversity, equity, and inclusion for social change,” Jonathan said.

“As a leader, I have seen how these values can bring people together, foster a sense of belonging, and unlock the full potential of individuals and communities. Conversely, their absence can lead to division, inequality, and social unrest.

“It is our responsibility as leaders and change-makers to promote a culture of diversity and inclusion - one that values and respects the dignity and worth of every human being and protects the interests of all,” he added.

Jonathan further noted that societies grounded in these principles are often more innovative, resilient, and harmonious. Reflecting on his time in office, he cited the implementation of policies promoting gender equality, youth empowerment, and regional balance as key measures that helped bridge divides and foster national unity.

“I know this because I saw how policies that promoted gender equality, youth empowerment, and regional balance during my time as president helped bridge divides and foster national unity,” he concluded.
